WICHITA — It was a big-time performance Monday for the Hesston High boys tennis team as the Swathers took first place in a strong seven-team field at the Wichita Collegiate Invitational.
Hesston scored 27 points to nip 5A power Kapaun, which scored 25. Other team scores were Maize (23), Wellington (22), Wichita Collegiate (20), Derby (11) and Andover Central (7).
“I was pleased with our day,” Hesston coach Mark Dahlsten said. “We played hard and competed well in each match. I am encouraged, but realize we still have some things we have to get better at.”
Jeb Carlson was 3-0 to win No. 2 singles. “Jeb moved into a single role today and did very well,” Dahlsten said. “I could tell early in the day he was still adjusting, but he got better as the day went along. Jeb shows a lot of maturity and poise beyond his age.”
The Swathers were solid in doubles. The No. 2 team of Brendan Boles and Aaron Fuqua went 2-1 for second, while the No. 1 team of Daniel Casimir and Isaac Decker was 2-1 for third. Mason Barber played No. 1 singles and was 1-2 for sixth.
