NEWTON — Jacob Lackey didn’t win the McPherson Invitational Golf Tournament on Monday at Turkey Creek, but the McPherson High standout nearly won the Newton Invitational on Tuesday at Sand Creek Station.

The MHS senior carved up the prestigious layout for a 71, finishing one shot back of medalist Wells Padgett of Maize South.

Lackey shot 37 on the front nine and toured the back in a crisp 34. Padgett had rounds of 36-34.

Behind Lackey, MHS shot a season-best 342 to take ninth place out of 14 teams. Maize South was an easy winner with a 304, while Valley Center was second with 319.

Other Bullpup scores were Colten Geren (88), Tyler Hoxie (88), Brock Malm (95), Drew Labertew (97) and Kyler Hoppes (102).
