STERLING — McPherson College’s softball team at one point this season was languishing in the KCAC basement as it started conference play 0-5.
But after Tuesday’s road sweep of Sterling, the Bulldogs are 6-5 and have pushed their overall record to 20-17 after going 9-39 last year as Ashley Spencer certainly has to be in the talk for KCAC Coach of the Year.
There’s no rest for the Bulldogs as they are playing Thursday at Ottawa, then host Southwestern on Friday. Both teams are 3-9 in the KCAC, so the Bulldogs really have a chance to zoom up the KCAC standings.
• Mac 4, Sterling 0 — Freshman pitcher Christie Betker was again dazzling, spinning a two-hit shutout and fanning eight, while walking only one.
Chelsea Conrad, the No. 9 hitter, was immense by going 3 for 3, including a double. Jessica Jones had two hits, one a double.
The game was scoreless until the fourth when the Bulldogs broke through with a run. They added another in the fifth and put the game out of reach with two in the seventh.
• Mac 8, Sterling 7 — It may have been the Bulldogs’ most exciting win of the year.
Down 7-1 going into the sixth, Mac hit for four runs in that inning to make Sterling nervous, then overtook the Warriors with three runs in the final inning for the stunning win.
Katie Holmes had the winning hit with a clutch two-run double.
Judith Salazar and Ali Smith had two hits apiece. Betker joined Holmes with two RBIs.
Betker was the winner in relief, throwing three innings of one-run ball and striking out three.
