Danica Fitzmorris can’t wait for Winfield catcher Kerry Murphy to graduate.

Murphy has been a one-girl wrecking crew against Fitzmorris’ McPherson High softball team throughout her career and her final appearance against the Bullpups resulted in nine RBIs in the Vikings’ 13-7, 14-8 sweep Tuesday at Grant Complex.

“That girl is a freak of nature,” Fitzmorris said laughingly after the game. “She can really hit.”

Murphy drove in four runs in Game 1, including a big two-run single in the eighth inning after the Bullpups had forced extras by tying it in the seventh on a clutch two-out RBI double by Bailea Crist.

In the second game, Murphy’s grand slam in the second inning tore a hole into the game and she had five RBIs total.

In both games, MHS fell behind big early. It was down 5-0 after a half-inning in the opener before coming back on two occasions to get it tied. It was 11-0 in Game 2 early, but MHS pulled within 11-5 and also scored two runs in the final innings when all was lost.

“I’m proud of them because they do have fight in them,” Fitzmorris said. “We have a few things we need to work on. We have a few positions we’re struggling at and we’re going to get better. We’re hitting the ball and I’m pleased about that. They run-ruled us last year, so we’re getting better.”

It was a big day for Crist. She was 3 for 5 in Game 1 and 2 for 4 in Game 2.

Sheridan Scott added three hits in Game 1, while Addie Fitzmorris and Elle Schrag collected two apiece. In Game 2, Brooke Schrag and Halle Giddings had two hits apiece, with Giddings and Fitzmorris driving in two.

MHS is now 1-3 on the year, but the losses have been to Andale and Winfield, two of the premier teams in the state. Winfield won the AVCTL Division III title last year and is primed to do it again this year.

The MHS JVs swept to improve to 3-1.

Game 1 was a 14-2 win behind a two-hitter by Sally Boese. Arianna Potter, Emily Smith and Katelyn Guffey all had two hits. Guffey and Sandra White stroked doubles.

In Game 2, MHS was an 11-0 winner behind Guffey’s two-hitter and five strikeouts. Guffey also had two hits and White had a triple. Winfield walked 12 MHS batters.

The Bullpups host Andover on Thursday.
