The schedule-maker has not been kind to McPherson High’s softball team this week.

After opening Monday with a quality split against very-strong Andale, the Bullpups were swept by defending AVCTL Division III champ Winfield on Tuesday, then here Thursday took on Andover, last year’s third-place team in Class 5A that is still loaded with talent.

MHS couldn’t keep pace with the Trojans, losing 15-8 and 10-0 decisions. In both games the Bullpups fell behind big early as the Trojans scored 14 runs in the first three innings of Game 1, then led 9-0 after 3 1/2 innings of Game 2.

The sweep at the hands of Andover left MHS at 1-5.

“That whole night was not what I want to see,” MHS coach Danica Fitzmorris said. “Too many errors, too many good hitters on the other side. Our pitching just isn’t doing it right now. Our pitching, we knew we were going to get hit, but we’ve got to play defense behind them. And we’re not doing that right now.”

On the positive side, Fitzmorris liked the fact her team outscored the Trojans 5-1 over the final four innings in Game 1 and had some good at-bats in Game 2, but just couldn’t score any runs.

“We always have some fight at the end,” she said.

Bailea Crist had a monster day for the Bullpups, collecting three hits in both games. Brooke Schrag and Gracy Feil had two hits apiece in Game 1.

MHS’ JVs split, losing the first game 16-5, but roaring back for a 22-7 victory in the nightcap to gain the split.

“I was very proud of how our girls bounced back after a subpar Game 1,” JV coach Lacey Morgan said. “We did a much better job of being disciplined at the plate.  Arianna Potter and Katelyn Guffey continue to hit the ball well. Savannah Thode had several nice defensive stops also.”

Potter and Guffey had two hits apiece in the first game. In the second game, Sandra White was 4 for 4 with three RBIs, while Potter was 3 for 3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Emily Smith and Brittani Burgess also drove in three runs. Sally Boese was the winning pitcher.
