Crime Update: Suspect Arrested

***UPDATE*** On Friday, April 14, 2017, Officers identified the victim of this homicide as 58 year old Steven Carlson of McPherson. His family has been notified.

Through the course of the investigation, officers identified 25 year old Travis Ryan Belt as a suspect in the homicide.

On April 16, 2017 at approximately 12:20 a.m., Travis Belt was arrested on the charge of Murder in the First Degree and booked into the McPherson County Jail.

Charges will be sent to McPherson County Attorney Torrance Parkins for review and filing.

The McPherson Police Department and Kansas Bureau of Investigation are continuing to investigate and urge anyone with information about Belt or any other person involved to immediately contact them.

McPherson Police were dispatched to a 911 caller stating that a friend was lying on the floor of his house and possibly deceased.

Officers immediately responded and the caller directed officers to the house in question. The officers entered the residence to render emergency aid and discovered the resident was already deceased.

The situation is being investigated as a homicide by the McPherson Police Department with assistance from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. Officers believe the victim was specifically targeted and known to the suspect or suspects.

Officers do not believe that this was a random act and therefore do not believe the public at large is endangered. The McPherson Police Department urges all residents to always be vigilant about their safety.
