Mac thinclads fare well at Tabor

HILLSBORO —  The McPherson College track and field team made the short drive to Hillsboro on Saturday to compete in the Tabor College Invitational, winning two events and recording 14 Top-5 finishes.

The McPherson men won two relays and took second in the third. The 3,200 relay team opened the day on the track by taking the title with a season-best time of 8:09.02, while the Bulldogs' 1,600 relay bookended the day with another first-place finish, winning in 3:27.00. In between, the McPherson 400 relay team placed second with a 41.90 clocking, once again surpassing the NAIA 'B' standard and missing a season-best time by 0.01 second.

Elsewhere on the track, DeShawn Pfeiff placed second in the 400 with a season-best time of 50.05. Demetres Greenwood also set a season-best in the 400 with a 52.45, while Amari Heisser established an outdoor PR in the event with a 52.64.

Hunter Sury took third in the 100 with a 10.72, surpassing the NAIA 'B' standard but just missing his season best (10.66) and the NAIA 'A' standard (10.65). J'Moi Penn was not far behind with a fourth-place finish in 10.76. Penn also took fourth in the 200 (21.81)

Jerod Fuller, running his first 1,500 of the season, PR'd en route to an eighth-place finish in 4:22.38.

In the field events, Cain Fowles scored Top-10 finishes in the javelin throw (fourth - 49.66m; 162-11), triple jump (eighth - 12.65m; 41-6) and high jump (ninth - 1.84m; 6-0 1/2) - all with personal-best efforts. He also cleared 5.68 meters (18-7 3/4) in the long jump.

Tanner Trigg took seventh in the hammer throw with a PR effort of 41.72 meters (136-10). He also threw 12.06 meters (39-7) in the shot put and 37.40 meters (122-8) in the discus throw.

Jordan Windholz added a pair of Top 5 finishes in the jumps, placing fourth in the triple jump (13.74m; 45-1) and fifth in the long jump (6.55m; 21-6).

For the Bulldog women, Amy Braimbridge posted one of McPherson's three team-leading third-place finishes with a 25.09 clocking in the 200. Jasmine Helms finished third in the triple jump (10.92m; 35-10) and added an eighth-place finish in the long jump (5.10m; 16-8 3/4). The Bulldogs also posted a third-place finish in the 3,200 relay with the team of Ane' Archuleta  Erika Doty, Taylor Dreiling and Rachel Foreman racing to a time of 10:38.47.

Lauren Wankum, taking a break from her usual 5Ks, 10Ks and half-marathons, PR'd in both the 1,500 (5:08.01), where she finished fourth, and the 800 (2:41.00). She was one of three Bulldogs to establish PRs in the half mile, joining Dreiling (2:44.14) and LeaAnn Myers (3:00.15). Myers also finished sixth in the 3,000 steeplechase with a PR-time of 14:19.38.

Jocelyn Cochran recorded a personal-best effort in the long jump with a leap of 4.96 meters (16-3 1/4).

The Bulldogs return to competition Saturday at the Baker University Relays in Baldwin City. That meet will serve as the team's final tune-up before the KCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which are scheduled to be held Thursday-Friday, May 4-5, at McPherson Stadium.
