The annual McPherson Invitational Track and Field Meet is scheduled for Thursday at McPherson Stadium.
The action gets under way at 3 p.m.
“This is a quality meet,” MHS coach Jace Pavlovich said. “I don't see any team running away with the team standings. It’s going to be fun. I would anticipate the difference between first and fourth will be in the single digits in both girls and boys.”
McPherson High’s Elle Barrett, the defending Class 4A state champion in the long and triple jumps, faces her toughest challenge of the year from Goddard Eisenhower’s Jaden Damon, who is the top seed in both events.
Barrett, who has a long jump best of 18-2 1/4, is only the No. 2 seed as Damon has gone 18-5 1/2. Same thing in the triple jump as Damon is again the No. 1 jumper going in at 37-10 1/2, while Barrett has a best of 37-8 1/2.
In addition to Goddard Eisenhower, the field includes powerhouse teams Hays and Newton, as well as Pratt, Salina Central, Salina South, Valley Center and Wichita North. Both the Newton boys and girls are among the top teams in Class 5A and Hays is a traditional power. The Newton girls are the defending 5A champions.
