McPherson High’s girls had only two first-place finishes all day Thursday.

But the Bullpups’ quality depth paid off as they outlasted Valley Center 118-115 to win the McPherson Invitational Track and Field championship Thursday at McPherson Stadium.

Meanwhile the Bullpup boys were fourth with 71 points to trail Valley Center (120), Pratt (98) and Salina South (94 1/2).

“Our kids were excited to compete at home after a long season on the road,” MHS coach Jace Pavlovich said. “We wanted to run off a small meet, but with quality teams. We got what we asked for. It was fun to watch some quality kids compete tonight. It wasn't our best performance overall as a team on the girls’ side, but still came away with the team win. Our guys exceeded expectations by breaking personal records and finished fourth in a tough field.”

MHS’ girls received wins in the two hurdle events, Morgan Howard winning in the 100 and Emma Ruddle taking the 300. But the Bullpups had a lot of seconds and thirds to pile up the points.

The highlight events were the long and triple jumps where MHS’ defending 4A state champion in both events, Elle Barrett, squared off against Goddard Eisenhower star Jade Damon in a matchup of potential state champions.

Damon was the top seed in both and backed up her ranking with a 17-1 in the long jump and 37-4 1/2 in the triple. Barrett was second in the triple with 36-7, but Bullpup teammate Kenzie Goering outlasted her in the long with her best jump of the year by going 17-1/2. Goering also was third in the triple with a 34-9 as the Bullpups as usual scored heavily in those events. Defending state champion Mandi Cooks, who has missed the year with a patella injury, returned for the home meet and took second, clearing 5-0.

For the boys, the two wins came in the jumps. Devin Cape captured the triple jump and Andric McGill won the high jump.
