McPherson High’s girls softball team reached the halfway point of its season with a 2-8 record after being swept here Thursday by AVCTL Division III powerhouse Circle.

It was all T-Birds in Game 1 as the early inning blues struck again for the Bullpups, giving up seven runs in the second to fall behind 9-0. Circle went on to end it early 11-1 in five innings.

“They hit, we didn’t,” MHS coach Danica Fitzmorris said simply.

Except for Sheridan Scott. She had two of the three Bullpup hits, including a double.

The second game was much more competitive, but Circle was a 6-3 winner.

“We hit better, but still had a tough time at the mound with 10 hits from Circle, who are now 13-1 with one loss to Mulvane and leading our league,” Fitzmorris said. “We have to have a plan at the plate and make their pitchers work as hard as they are making ours. We need more quality at bats.”

Addie Fitzmorris had two hits for the Bullpups, including a double.

MHS still has half a season left to play. It hosts another strong team, Augusta, on Monday, then completes the suspended doubleheader with Salina South here Wednesday. Wrapping up the week is a road trip Thursday to El Dorado.

Circle has good talent coming up as well by winning both JV games.

The first game was 1-0 until the fifth when the T-Birds scored three runs, then added six in the sixth to key a 12-1 win. Ariana Potter and Katelyn Guffey had two hits apiece for the Bullpups.

Game 2 saw McPherson jumped out to an 8-3 lead, but couldn't hold it in a 14-11 loss. The Bullpups had big games from Avery Mayfield (three hits, three runs, two RBIs), Sally Boese (3 for 3, three RBIs) and Arynn Almquist (two hits).

"We unfortunately were not very mentally tough," MHS coach Lacey Morgan said. "Game 1 was close, only 4-1 after the fifth, but then they started hitting the ball more and we panicked, making both physical and mental errors.  We were also unable to string together enough hits to score. Game 2 we came out ready to play.  We hit really well through the first three innings and then our bats went cold.  It’s a tough pill to swallow when you lose an eight-run lead by giving up too many physical and mental errors as well as walks. It then overshadows some of the really good things we did tonight, hitting triples and doubles as well as an amazing double play at third by Emily Smith. Hopefully the girls learn from this and will fight hard to not have this feeling again at the end of an evening."
