GREAT BEND — It was another upper-division finish for the McPherson High girls swimming team on Friday in the Great Bend Invitational and all the teams that finished ahead of the Bullpups are expected to be top state contenders in their respective classes.

Great Bend took first, finishing ahead of Newton, and both teams are expected to be among the best in Class 5A. Manhattan was third and will challenge for Class 6A supremacy.

Megan Cutting’s second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke was the top MHS placing.

“We had some amazing swims today against some great competition,” McPherson coach Abby Bradstreet said. “It’s always good for us to go to meets like these. We don’t see many of these teams very much throughout the season, so having some new competition is always good for the girls. They continue to impress me with how supportive they are of one another. We had to be flexible with swims today and put some girls in events that they do not normally swim due to illness and injury, but they all swam pretty decent. We definitely have some things to work on before the next meet. but I know we will come back strong.”

MHS goes to Hutchinson on Tuesday and El Dorado on Saturday to wrap up the regular season before the league and state meets are contested.
