HUTCHINSON — The Hutchinson Invitational Golf Tournament is designed to bring together the best of the best in Kansas.
That must mean McPherson High’s Jacob Lackey is one of the best.
Lackey matched par at 71 to finish in a tie for fifth place on Friday at Carey Park and also had the lowest score of all seniors in the field.
Lackey has signed to attend the University of Central Oklahoma next year.
Shawnee Mission East’s Owen Hill shot a 69 for medalist honors. Three golfers tied for second with 70s, and then came Lackey and two others golfers, one being Sacred Heart’s Grant Herrenbruck, who won the McPherson Invitational earlier this month and recently committed to the University of Kansas despite being only a junior.
MHS shot 353 as a team and finished ahead of eight teams in the 32-team field, including the tourney host Hutchinson.
Teams were allowed to bring only five players and count the best four. Tyler Hoxie shot an 86 for the second-best MHS scored, while Brock Malm (101), Drew Labertew (104) and Colten Geren (104) completed the Bullpup scoring.
Shawnee Mission East shot 294 and tied with 2A power Sacred Heart for first. East had the best fifth-place score, which was the tiebreaker.
