McPherson High golfer Jacob Lackey had a roller-coaster of a day on Tuesday.
Because he had missed a meet earlier in the season, MHS coach Kurt Kinnamon found a meet for him to compete in as a substitute.
Lackey competed as an individual in the I-135 Shootout that started with 18 holes at Hesston and finished with 18 holes at Turkey Creek.
Lackey got off to a slow start at Hesston as he had a 42 on the front side. But he made five birdies on his second nine for a 31 and 73 total.
With the scene shifted to Turkey Creek, Lackey shot a 75, which included a 9 on No. 18 as he hit two balls out of bounds.
The scores were amazing. Maize South’s Wells Padgett, who has signed with Auburn, was medalist after rounds of 67-66-133, which was 8 under par.
Four golfers wound up under par. Expected Class 2A champion Sacred Heart was the winner with a 300-285-585. The 285 score was just 5-over-par as perfect conditions made Turkey Creek defenseless.
Lackey wound up taking ninth.
