SALINA — It’s the baseball doubleheader that will never end.

McPherson High and Salina South attempted to finish their doubleheader that started on April 21.

The teams played Wednesday in Salina after Grant Complex was deemed too wet. The game was resumed in the fourth inning with South holding a 5-1 lead.

The Bullpups scratched and clawed, but wound up a run short in an 8-7 defeat, falling to 9-4 on the season. Game 2 was halted in the first inning by lightning, then rain, and may or may not be made up next week.

“We lost the game 7-8, but man did our kids compete and play hard,” MHS coach Heath Gerstner said. “We definitely had our chances to win the game and almost feel like we let one get away. Gunnar (Reiss) did an outstanding job pitching and giving us a chance to come back and make a game of it.”

Alex Sitts and Jack Reifschneider had two hits apiece.

MHS heads to El Dorado today. A Bullpup sweep and a Buhler loss to Augusta would give MHS the Division III title.
