McPherson College’s men’s track and field team is off to the early lead in the KCAC Outdoor Championships that are being contested at McPherson Stadium.

The Bulldogs compiled 58 points on Thursday’s first day, with Saint Mary second with 52.

The Mac women are in fourth with 18 points.

Mac’s men had two individual champions on the first day as Hunter Sury won the long jump in 22-2 1/2 and Jerod Fuller won the 3,000 steeplechase in 10:15.24.

Sury also will be the top seed going into today’s 100 meter finals after a prelim-best 10.77.

Brandt Wolters, the defending KCAC champion in the javelin but bothered by a bad elbow all spring, did manage to take second with a throw of 178-10.

McPherson High grad Lauren Wankum had the women’s best finish of the opening day by taking third in the 10,000 meters in 40:09.38.

Field events start at 12:30 today with finals on the track starting at 5:00.
