GREAT BEND — McPherson College’s softball team nearly pulled off a stunning upset Thursday in the first round of the KCAC Tournament.

Mac, the No. 7 seed, was edged 3-2 by No. 2 Kansas Wesleyan. The game was tied 1-1 until the fourth when the Coyotes scored, then they added another run in the fifth. Mac’s last run came in the sixth. Judith Salazar had a homer for the Bulldogs.

Bethany also lost its opener, 8-1 to Ottawa, and like Mac is in the loser's bracket today.

McPherson College is matched against Oklahoma Wesleyan at 1:00, while on the other field at the same time Bethany goes up against Friends, which was upset by Saint Mary in the first round.

Meanwhile the Bulldog baseball team lost to regular-season champion Oklahoma Wesleyan 16-6 in its first-round tournament game at Hays. Trevor Haycock and Jakob Shields hit homers for Mac.

The Bulldogs are in today’s loser’s bracket against Tabor at 11 a.m. in Great Bend as the scene shifts back. The Bluejays were stunned 12-7 by York in the first round, easily the upset of the day.
