HESSTON — It was a gathering of schools with tradition-rich track and field histories on Thursday in the Hesston Invitational.

Among them were the host Swathers and Smoky Valley.

The Hesston girls took second place to Cheney, 127-115. The Swathers were led by double gold medal winner Celbi Richardson (discus, shot), while Kylie Klassen captured the pole vault and Hannah Ferguson won the 3,200.

Smoky Valley’s girls were fifth in the 10-team field with 42 points. The top Viking effort were seconds by Hailey Priddy in the 1,600 and Meredith Galloway in the 100 hurdles.

The boys’ race had a lot of balance, with Garden Plain scoring 113 points for first, Halstead was second with 96, Hesston was third with 83 and Smoky Valley was fourth with 80.

Parker Roth continued his dominance of the sprints for Hesston by winning the 100 and 200. He also anchored by the winning 4 x 100 team that also included Josh Roth, Zach Esau and Mitchell Martin. Esau blazed to a 1:58.83 in the 800 to grab the gold.

For the Vikings, who rode their fleet of distance runners to big points, Logan Windholz won the 1,600 and Joshua Peterson snared the 3,200.
