SALINA — McPherson High’s track and field teams faced their best competition of the year on Friday as the Salina Central Invitational was loaded with teams that will make considerable noise at Wichita later this month for the state meet.

The MHS girls finished in the middle of the 10-team pack as they were fifth with 57 points. 6A schools Junction City, Hutchinson and Manhattan led the way and 5A Great Bend also finished ahead of the Bullpups.

Elle Barrett won the lone MHS gold on the day as she took the triple jump and also was second in the long jump.

The MHS boys were ninth with 34 points, as Junction City, Hutchinson and Manhattan were 1-2-3. Andric McGill’s second in the long jump was MHS’ top mark.

“We enjoyed some great weather and tough competition in Salina,” MHS coach Jace Pavlovich said. “Our kids saw the same level of competition that we will see in our regional meet. It was good to get that experience. We cannot wait to get back to work Monday in preparation of our league meet on Friday.”
