With the seventh annual "Blake Reed Miracle Mile" on Saturday, the McPherson community will remember a young man who exemplified what it means to be a McPherson College Bulldog.
The mile run will be held in the McPherson College Stadium, with registration starting at 9 a.m. and the mile-long race beginning at 10 a.m. The fee is $25 and T-shirts are not guaranteed.
Blake Reed, who was the student assistant coach for the McPherson College football team, died on Aug. 3, 2010, from complications of Muscular Dystrophy. He was 22.
A lifelong resident of McPherson, Blake graduated from McPherson High School in 2006 and attended McPherson College. Though he could not take the field, McPherson College football coaches considered Blake the heart of the team. He regularly talked to local high school players to convince them to join the Bulldogs.
In honor of that passion, Blake's family established the Blake Reed Mac2Mac Football Scholarship, which goes to a McPherson High School football player who chooses to attend McPherson College and play football. All proceeds from the Blake Reed Miracle Mile entry fees benefit the scholarship, which to-date has had contributions of more than $50,000.
Previous recipients of the scholarship include James Temaat, John Davidson, Michael Ramos, Cole Long, Evan Clary and Kavoderic McIntyre.
