WELLINGTON — The McPherson High girls softball team continues to play better than its record indicates as it lost a pair of games on Monday to Wellington.
Game 1 was a tough one to swallow as for the third straight game the Bullpups lost in the opponent’s last at-bat. After McPherson had tied the game with a run in the top of the seventh, the Crusaders walked it off for a 4-3 victory.
The Bullpups actually outhit the Crusaders in the game, with Brooke Schrag collecting four.
The second game was close for a while as it was tied at 3-all going into the bottom of the fourth when Wellington scored a run. That was just a precursor as the Crusaders then exploded for six runs in the fifth to spark an 11-3 triumph. Gracy Feil had two hits for the Bullpups and Addie Fitzmorris drove in two.
In JV action, the Bullpups lost the opener 13-1, with Morgan Jones picking up two hits and Savannah Thode knocking in the only run with a double.
Wellington won Game 2 by an 8-4 score, scoring four runs in each of the first two innings. Thode was 2 for 3 to pace the Bullpups. She had another double, as did Breckyn Turner.
McPherson is now 2-14 and hosts Salina South on Wednesday, then wraps up the regular season on Thursday with two games at home against Buhler.
