HESSTON — McPherson High senior golf standout Jacob Lackey could only look on and watch in disbelief.

Lackey was one stroke up heading into the final hole of the AVCTL Division III Championships on Tuesday at Hesston Municipal.

Lackey and Augusta’s Jake Becker were both in the bunker on the par-5 18th in two. Lackey’s ball was buried and he couldn’t get his first attempt out of the sand. He then hit next shot just onto the green about 40 feet away.

Meanwhile Becker holed his shot for an eagle-3. Lackey did run in his long putt, but Becker finished with a 71 and Lackey a 72 as nobody else in the field was under 82.

The Bullpups wound up taking second place as a team. Other McPherson scores were Colton Geren (87), Tyler Hoxie (89), Kyler Hoppes (91), Brock Malm (94) and Drew Labertew (97).

Augusta was the team champion.

McPherson will compete in the regional tournament next week at Clay Center.
