HILLSBORO — A terrific pitching effort by Ryan Weldy in Game 2 against Hillsboro on Tuesday will give Smoky Valley’s baseball team some momentum heading into Tuesday’s Class 4A Division II regional tournament.

Weldy fired a shutout in a 3-0 Viking victory, which gave it a split of the day.

The Vikes scored single runs in the first and second innings and added an insurance tally in the sixth. Zach Able and Ty Campbell had two hits apiece.

Smoky Valley had let Game 1 get away as Hillsboro walked it off in the seventh by scoring three runs for a 7-6 victory.

The Vikings had trailed 4-1 at one point before charging back for a 6-4 lead.

Ben Weldy was 3 for 4 with a double. Austin Golden was 2 for 4, including a double. Austin Lustfield added the Vikes’ third double.

Lustfield took the loss.

The Vikings, now 5-14, will be serving as a regional host.
