SALINA — The future of girls track and field for McPherson is limitless.

Both the McPherson Middle School eighth-graders and seventh-graders came away with Pioneer League championships in the season finale on Tuesday.

“(The) eighth-grade girls are a group that is so deep with talent that they are able to place two people in the Top 6 in nearly every event and sometimes three people,” MMS coach TJ Jackson said. “They have been unselfish with their entries and did what was best for the team. Nearly every girl participated in multiple events. They really are good at everything.”

The eighth-grade girls were led by an individual triple by Grace Pyle. Katie Berg, Kassidy Beam and Emma Malm were other individual winners.

Jackson was effusive with his praise for the seventh-grade girls as well.

“The seventh-grade girls dominated the league championship as well, but in a much different way,” Jackson said. “They are the largest team we have had in years with 42 girls. With this we were able to spread out their talents and avoid overusing athletes.”

Lauren Labertew doubled for the seventh-grade girls while Cameron Pelzel and Rhian Swanson also triumphed.

The eighth-grade boys took third place.

“The eighth-grade boys were hit with a big blow at the beginning of the week due to athletes being ineligible,” Jackson said. “However, no excuses were made and they came out like madmen and had performances that are exactly what you expect to see at the peak of their season. This group improved from a sixth-place finish last year to a third-place finish this year, even with the missing athletes.”

Aaron Powell doubled and was joined in the individual winner’s circle by Cody Achilles.

The seventh-grade boys took fourth place.

“(The) seventh-grade boys have a very similar story. Beginning of the week hit and three boys who were very large contributors were removed from events for various reasons,” Jackson said. “This group kept their heads up, moved forward and gave some of their best performances. They ended with a fourth-place finish and one they should be proud of considering the circumstances.”

Augustus Ruddle led the Bullpups with an individual double.
