South varsity defeats MHS JVs in baseball

With the regional pairings having been decided earlier in the day, McPherson High’s completion of its baseball game with Salina South here Wednesday was rendered meaningless.

So Bullpup coach Heath Gerstner, knowing his team has a huge showdown with Buhler scheduled here Thursday, went with his JVs against Salina South’s varsity.

The predictable result was a 14-2 Cougar win and sweep of the doubleheader that began on April 21 and a second attempt to play was halted in Salina as well.

MHS is now 12-6 and takes an 8-0 AVCTL record into today’s games with Buhler unless rain washes them out.

“Proud of our young guys for showing up and competing in this game on short notice,” Gerstner said. “This young group put up a couple runs and with some work this summer and offseason some of these faces will be faces of varsity real soon.”

South had three innings of four runs each to spark the win. Gabe Hoover drove in both Bullpup runs.

Today’s doubleheader has a scheduled starting time of 4 p.m. Be watching for updates as to whether it will be played due to the early morning rain in McPherson.
