Danica Fitzmorris is convinced her McPherson High softball team belies its 3-15 record and that it could win its regional here next week if it plays to its potential since there was no team with a winning record at the time of the pairings.
The Bullpups flashed that potential on Wednesday as they upset Salina South 12-7 in Game 1 and then came back from a 9-0 deficit to lose only 14-11 in Game 2 against a Cougar team that’s now 10-10 on the year.
MHS is scheduled to host Buhler for two games today and Fitzmorris is hoping to get those in despite a dreary forecast as the Crusaders are just 1-17. If they could sweep, they would carry momentum into Tuesday’s regional opener against Abilene, which has a record similar to the Bullpups’.
Fitzmorris said the team had a conversation before the doubleheader about its hitting approach and the result was a day that produced 23 runs and five homers as there was a jet stream blowing out to center field that made every high fly ball a potential bomb.
In Game 1, the Bullpups exploded for six runs in the third inning, highlighted by an Elle Schrag grand slam. Bailea Crist also went yard and drove in three runs. Elle Schrag also was the winner.
MHS got down big in Game 2, but continued to battle. Brooke Schrag crushed a three-run homer, while also going deep were Gracy Feil and Mayci James. MHS scored the last seven runs of the game to make it interesting.
Crist had a nice day by going 5 for 10 with six RBIs.
If MHS and Buhler do get to play, first pitch today is 4:00 at Grant Complex.
