McPherson High’s girls swimming team hopes to cap a terrific season this weekend in the State Swimming and Diving Championships at Topeka.
The Bullpups will have two competitors in individual events and then two relay teams.
Megan Cutting has qualified in two individual events, the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Maggie Leaf also will compete in the 100 backstroke.
Joining Cutting and Leaf on the 200 medley relay team are Amanda Starkel and Cassie Cooks, while the 200 freestyle relay team is rounded out by Cooks and Hope Williams.
“The state times and entries this year were extremely competitive and we were disappointed to not make it into state with all of our consideration times,” MHS coach Abby Bradstreet said. “However, the girls are still working hard and I feel they are very prepared for the events they will be swimming this weekend. As a team I feel confident that we will be able to make it to finals in the 200 medley relay as well as Megan Cutting in both of her individual events.”
Bradstreet said the team has high goals.
“The goal is to make finals in the Top 8 so we have a chance of medaling,” Bradstreet said. “If we make 9th to 16th place, then we do not have a chance of medaling, but that is still a huge accomplishment to even make it to the second day of State Swimming. Megan is seeded extremely well going into the meet and I truly believe she has a chance of making Top 3 in both of her individual events. It will definitely be an exciting weekend full of some amazing swims. No matter what happens, I am so proud of these girls and all of their accomplishments this season. It's bittersweet to know we are only losing one member from this state team for next year. We have some good freshmen coming up within the next year and I know we will be just as strong of a team next year.”
