McPherson Junior American Legion baseball coach Heath Gerstner was hoping his team could get off to a good start in its season opener here Thursday against the Salina Hawks.
How about a seven-run first inning?
Post 24 used that outburst as a buffer against a Hawks comeback, but McPherson still came away with an 11-7 victory at Grant Complex.
Honestee Whittker’s homer was the big blow. He had two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs.
“Honestee hit that home run to start off the scoring and our guys kind of just followed that with a lot of energy to score seven runs in the first inning,” Gerstner said. “Without a doubt we lost focus for a few innings after that and will work to constantly improve.”
Other offensive instigators were Jakob Feil (three RBIs), Devin Feil (two hits, two RBIs), Braylon Stanford (two hits) and Chandler Wiard (two RBIs).
“I am excited to coach this group this summer and see them develop and hopefully we have some of these faces on the varsity next spring,” said Gerstner, who graduated a host of seniors off this year’s state-ranked McPherson High team.
Wiard was the winning pitcher and Gerstner employed five as none pitched more than 2 2/3 innings.
Post 24 plays Saturday at the Wichita Aviators. Game time is 1 p.m. at Wichita East High School.
