The McPherson Junior American Legion baseball team upped its record to 3-0 here Sunday with a sweep of the Wichita Aviators. The games were to have been played Saturday in Wichita, but rain forced a postponement and change of venue.

The Aviators are a team consisting of players from Rose Hill, Wichita East and Derby.

“Really excited about getting two wins against a good Wichita Aviators team,” McPherson coach Heath Gerstner said. “We were able to let virtually every pitcher on the team get some work in and not really overwork anyone as we head to Augusta on Tuesday."

McPherson won Game 1 7-2 behind the solid pitching of Braydon Stout, Kaleb Hoppes and Gabe Hoover. Stout allowed only one run over four innings to pick up the victory.

“We were able to jump on their pitcher and was very encouraged by how we hit the ball against their pitcher who actually pitched against us this spring in the Rose Hill game,” Gerstner said.

Devin Feil led the offense with two hits and two RBIs. Jakob Feil and Chandler Wiard added two hits apiece.

Game 2 resulted in an 8-5 win for Post 24 as Devin Feil had a monster game by going 4 for 4 with 4 RBIs. He had a triple and two doubles. Hoppes had two hits and two RBIs and Will Powers added two RBIs. Honestee Whittker scored three runs.

Wiard was the winning pitcher, while Jakob Feil, Devin Feil, Will Powers and Gabe Hoover all threw in the contest.

"I would be remiss to not mention our overall pitching and defense just being solid,” Gerstner said. “I don't think we have played that solid defensively in a while and that is encouraging.  We are really working to be consistent with our pitching and defense each and everyday we go out."

Gerstner said he’s looking forward to Tuesday’s test with Augusta.

“Coach (Doug) Jefferson (Augusta High’s head coach in the spring) does a good job in summer taking his kids who he thinks will compete for varsity and puts them on a team and we will playing that team,” Gerstner said. “I am excited about the challenge."
