Salina Falcon pitchers walked too many in the first game, while McPherson Post 24 pitchers walked too many in the second game.

The end result was a split of the American Legion baseball doubleheader Tuesday night at Grant Complex, which featured the usage of wood bats.

Post 24 won the first game in dramatic fashion as a bases-loaded walk coaxed by Jack Reifschneider in the ninth inning scored Jeff Reed with the winning run in a 5-4 McPherson victory. The final three runs it scored came on bases-loaded walks.

Raine Reitsma came on in relief of starter Trey Hanken and delivered 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball to pick up the win. Reitsma gave up just three hits and fanned six.

“Raine Reitsma did an outstanding job on the mound,” McPherson coach Mark Reifschneider said. “I was very proud of him tonight. He had a couple tough outings recently, but he really stepped up big tonight and got us through the extra innings and got a win for his team.”

Zane Myers and Gunnar Reiss drove in two runs apiece for McPherson, which had trailed 4-1 after 3 1/2 innings.

Game 2 was all Salina, 11-2. The Falcons won despite collecting just six hits as they were the beneficiaries of eight walks.

Five different McPherson players had one hit each and all were singles.

“Our pitchers had a hard time finding the zone,” Reifschneider said. “We walked way too many and had a couple costly errors. We couldn't get anything going offensively. Give credit to Salina's pitcher. He had pretty good stuff and stayed in the zone.”

Reifschneider said the wood bats did make a difference, but it was the same for both teams.

“We struggled at the plate a little in both games,” he said. “I don't know if the wood bats had anything to do with it, but we didn't hit a lot of hard shots tonight.”

The teams hook up again on Thursday, but this time in Salina. McPherson is 3-3 on the year, 1-1 in the Central Kansas League.
