NEWTON — McPherson Junior American Legion Post 24 baseball coach Heath Gerstner said his team didn’t bring its “A” game on Saturday, but still had enough in the tank to overcome Newton and Hutchinson in the Central Kansas League Round-Robin Tournament.

“We won both games, but did not play the brand of baseball I like,” said Gerstner, whose team is now 6-1. “Many of our guys had attended Fort Hays team football camp the past 3 days so I was proud of them for grinding out two wins.”

Post 24 needed a seven-run seventh inning to overcome Newton, 14-11. McPherson entered the final inning down 9-7, but erupted.

Hitting stars were Jakob Feil (three runs, three RBIs), Honestee Whittker (two RBIs), Devin Feil (3 for 3, three RBIs), Will Powers (two hits), Kourtney Craig (three runs, two hits) and Tyler Scott (two RBIs).

Devin Feil was the winner in relief.

The magic number of the day was 14 as McPherson again scored 14 runs in its second game for a 14-3 rout of Hutchinson. Again a seven-run inning was the firestarter, this time coming in the fourth inning.

Offensive instigators were Jakob Feil (four RBIs), Devin Feil (two hits, three RBIs), Kaleb Hoppes (two RBIs) and Craig (three hits, two RBIs). Shane Starkel went the distance to pick up the win.

McPherson is playing two more games today starting at 2 p.m. Gerstner said Salina and Buhler are both top-flight teams and that today will be a challenge.
