After the McPherson Senior American Legion baseball team slogged its way to pair of road losses on Sunday to the Buhler Nationals, Post 24 coaches Mark Reifschneider and Matt McCasland appealed to the team’s intensity level for Monday’s single-game rematch at Grant Complex.
Post 24 responded with an energized 10-2 rout of the Nationals to salvage one game of the three-game series. McPherson is now 5-5 on the season, 3-3 in the Central Kansas League.
“After the two losses at Buhler last night, coach McCasland and I encouraged the kids to compete better in every aspect. They did tonight,” Reifschneider said.
The firestarter to a five-run first inning was a three-run homer by Mikey Saverino, which sent a positive vibe through the rest of the team.
Jack Reifschneider took care of the rest. He bedazzled the Nationals, striking out 13 in six innings of work. Nathan Robl pitched the seventh.
“Jack pitched very well tonight,” Mark Reifschneider said. “He threw a lot of strikes and Buhler had a hard time connecting. We also competed very well at the plate.”
Post 24 pounded out 10 hits. Zane Myers and Gunnar Reiss had two apiece, one of Reiss’ being a double. Alex Kalkhorst also stroked a double.
McPherson was to have hosted Chase County on Thursday, but the twinbill has been postponed.
