HUTCHINSON — Good hitting, good pitching and good defense generally leads to a good result.
That was the case for McPherson’s Senior American Legion baseball team on Tuesday as it was solid in all phases of the game against Hutchinson for a 13-4 victory in a single seven-inning game.
“Overall, I was pleased with our effort tonight,” said McPherson coach Mark Reifschneider, whose team is now 6-5 on the season and 4-3 in Central Kansas League games.
A five-run second inning propelled Post 24 to the victory. It also had a pair of three-run innings.
Post 24 had the bats smoking as it pounded out 15 hits, including three apiece by Dylan Werries and Nathan Robl. Gunnar Reiss, Alex Kalkhorst and Mikey Saverino all added two hits.
Kalkhorst, Jack Reifschneider and Corbin Steinert all took turns on the mound. The highlight was Reifschneider striking out the side in both innings he pitched.
“Alex, Jack and Corbin did a good job pitching,” said Reifschneider, who noted that workhorse pitcher Raine Reitsma did not pitch as he’s been battling some arm tightness.
Reifschneider said the team has done a good job overcoming an injury to outfielder Alex Sitts, who was limited to pinch-running duties on Tuesday. Robl, Saverino, Zane Myers and Tyler Wheat have filled in playing the outfield in his absence.
The victory pushed Post 24 past the .500 mark at 6-5. McPherson and Hutchinson do battle again on Thursday, but this time at Grant Complex. First pitch is set for 6:00.
