McPherson’s Junior American Legion baseball team returned home on Tuesday to take on Central Kansas League rival Hutchinson at Grant Complex.

And what a homecoming it was.

Post 24 swept Hutchinson in lopsided fashion, winning the opener 17-3 and then taking the nightcap 12-2.

“Always excited about a sweep and thought we had some very timely hits,” McPherson coach Heath Gerstner said. “Hutchinson is in rebuilding mode and they have a young squad that is learning the game. Our kids are learning how the game is played and we just played in a different gear this evening. I don't know if we were necessarily as good as the scores showed, but always nice to win two games."

In the first game, McPherson had a merry-go-round of a first inning by scoring 10 runs and then added five in the second. The game was halted after 3 1/2 innings by the run rule.

Post 24 pounded out 14 hits in just three innings. Devin Feil was 3 for 3 with four RBIs, while Shane Starkel was 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Kaleb Hoppes, Tyler Scott, Brayden Stout and Chandler Wiard all drove in two runs. Wiard had a homer, while Hoppes and Scott stroked triples. Feil had two doubles and Dawson Shetler had one.

Stout was the winning pitcher.

The second game was more of the same as McPherson scored seven runs in the second inning and added four in the third to key the rout.

Starkel added three more RBIs to lead the McPherson offense. Scott and Gabe Hoover drove in two runs apiece. Scott and Devin Feil drilled triples and Hoover had a double.

Hoover was the winning pitcher, fanning five in his two innings of work.

“Our No. 1 goal of the summer is to develop pitching and build confidence defensively and we were able to throw a bunch of pitchers this evening,” Gerstner said.

With the sweep, McPherson improved to 13-3 on the season. After playing seven games in the last week, the Juniors have some time off as next action is Monday at Buhler.
