The brooms were out.
McPherson’s Senior American Legion baseball team took both ends of a doubleheader from Hutchinson on Thursday at Grant Complex to complete a sweep of the season series, taking all three games.
Post 24 didn’t have much trouble with Hutch when the teams played on Tuesday, but when the venue changed to McPherson the Reno Countians put up more of a fight.
Alex Sitts’ walkoff hit in the bottom of the seventh inning won the first game, 7-6. Post 24 had taken a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, only to see Hutch tie the game with a pair of runs in the seventh.
Alex Kalkhorst was 3 for 3 and Gunnar Reiss drove in three runs to spark McPherson. Sitts, Jack Reifschneider and Dylan Werries all collected two hits as the team totaled 10.
“We were able to take advantage of some errors,” McPherson coach Mark Reifschneider said. “We had a couple of timely hits in the bottom of the seventh, including Alex Sitts' walk-off hit over the left fielder.”
Reifschneider was the winner in relief of Corbin Steinert.
Post 24 blazed to a 9-0 lead after two innings of the second game, but to Hutch’s credit it didn’t roll over as it closed within 9-6 by game’s end.
Reifschneider’s homer capped a six-run first inning and Post 24 added three more runs in the second as it massaged the lead from there.
Reifschneider had two RBIs.
“We started strong offensively with both walks and hits capped by Jack's home run. I felt like we just coasted from that point on,” Reifschneider said.
McPherson improved to 8-5 on the season, 6-3 in Central Kansas League games. Post 24 is home again on Monday to take on Newton.
