The Excel plant in Hesston has announced a large lay-off of 270 workers.

Excel calls the change a reorganization that will require reducing the Hesston employee count by 270 production positions.

Excel employed just over 1,000 workers in 2016 according to The Wichita Business Journal’s Book of Lists.

Letters were distributed to the workers on June 21st, with information about final wages, unemployment benefits and an invitation to a job fair on June 28th, in Newton.

The lay-offs have occurred less than 18 months after Cedric Ford killed three people and injured 20 others after being served a restraining order while at work.
