Kelly Sorenson matched par on the front nine and par on the back for a 70 to grab the first-round lead in the 34th annual McPherson City Golf Tournament on Friday at Turkey Creek.

Sorenson eagled No. 9 to get to even-par 35 and used a birdie on No. 17 when he drove the par-4 to shoot another 35.

He’s one shot up on six-time champion Treg Fawl, who had a 71, including a 34 on his front nine.

Mark Gayer and Derek Burgan shot 73s, while Jamie Piper and Steve Sell carded 74s, with Sell starting his round with eight straight 4s on his scorecard before making eagle on No. 9 for a 35, but faded on the back.

Piper and Ryan Schmid lead the team event with a 66, with Piper on fire on his back nine with five birdies. They are two shots up on Sorenson and Alan Porter.

Fawl and his father, Tony, shot a 69, while three teams shot 70s — Chris Stucky-Jason Buschbom, Gayer and his father, Doug, and Burgan and Brian Bengtson.

Shooting 71s were the teams of Kurt Kinnamon-Mark Wash and Sell-Cliff Hawkes.

Saturday’s round is at Rolling Acres with the final round Sunday at McPherson Country Club.
