McPherson’s EJ Kretzer was part of Team Kansas that recently competed in the USA Cadet Wrestling National Duals for both Olympic styles in York, Pa.

There were 30 states represented and Kretzer helped Team Kansas place 12th in the freestyle, which included wins against North Carolina, Kentucky, South Carolina and Oregon, while losing to Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee and Michigan.

The team then took 16th in the Greco competition with wins against North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Maryland, while losing to Minnesota, Michigan, Indiana and South Carolina.

The 10-day event provided a tremendous opportunity by practicing and competing daily with the best wrestlers in the nation. As the team traveled by bus across the nation, it stopped at numerous wrestling venues. One of the highlights was spending two days practicing at the Penn State wrestling facility with their coaching staff. Penn State has won six of the last seven college wrestling championships. Kretzer qualified for the Kansas Dual Team by placing in the Top 3 at the Kansas Freestyle and Greco State Tournament last May.

He has also qualified for the individual National Championship event July 14-22 in Fargo, N.D.
