General Birdseye McPherson’s Statue was commemorated on Monday July 3rd. The ceremony celebrates the 100th anniversary of the statue’s original dedication on July 4th, 1917.

Monday’s ceremony was attended by a McPhersons City and County Commissioners, The Mayor and Kansas Senator Rick Wilborn along with a crowd of McPherson residents.

David Nigh of the McPherson Historical Society presented the history of the statue and the original ceremony with memorabilia handed down from his mother, who was at the original ceremony 100 years ago.

The statue weighs some 20 tons and cost approximately $15,000 at the time it was commissioned from sculptor John Paulding of Missouri.

A video of the full ceremony is available on Facebook so don’t miss out on this centennial event.
