HUTCHINSON — It was a strong start for the McPherson Senior American Legion baseball team on Friday in the Hutchinson Wood Bat Tournament.
Post 24 exploded out of the gates with an 11-1 rout of Kingman before winning a tense pitching duel with Hays, 2-1.
“The Kingman team had a lot of younger kids. It was a good low-stress game for us to knock off the rust. Their pitchers gave us a lot of free bags,” said McPherson coach Mark Reifschneider, whose team had not played in nearly two weeks.
Post 24 won that game despite collecting just four hits but showed a good eye by earning nine walks. Gunnar Reiss scored three runs without the benefit of picking up a hit and Zane Myers had two RBIs. Dylan Werries threw three hitless innings and Jeff Reed completed the four-inning no-hitter.
Against Hays, Post 24 received great pitching from Corbin Steinert, who went 6 1/3 innings before Jack Reifschneider came on for the save, striking out both batters he faced. McPherson scored both of its runs in the fifth inning.
“This was a very clean game on both sides,” Reifschneider said. “It was a classic pitchers duel. Corbin Steinert pitched an awesome game. He was throwing all pitches for strikes and hit his spots. Both defenses were excellent as well. I was very proud of our guys for their ability to lock in after such a long time off.”
Reiss had two hits for McPherson, which had only five in the game, which was matched by the Monarchs.
Post 24, now 11-6, plays just one game today against the Kansas Cannons.
