NEWTON — Good start, bad finish.

After the McPherson Senior American Legion baseball team struck for three runs in the top of the first inning Tuesday night against Newton, it was all Knights after that as they scored in each of their six innings for a 13-5 victory in a single Central Kansas League game.

McPherson thus finished regular-season play with a 13-8 record, 7-5 in the CKL.

Post 24 coach Mark Reifschneider saved his main starting pitchers as the Zone Tournament is scheduled for this weekend in Great Bend.

“We were able to get some work in for a few pitchers tonight before we start postseason this Saturday,” he said.

Jeff Reed collected two hits and drove in two runs to lead McPherson, while Dylan Werries added two hits and scored two runs.

Three McPherson pitchers combined for 11 walks. Newton’s big inning was the fourth when it scored four runs.

Reifschneider said due to an error, the tournament bracket has been revised. McPherson now plays at 11 a.m. Saturday against Hutchinson, while Hays meets Great Bend in the 1 p.m. game.

Post 24 is 3-0 against Hutchinson this year.

Two teams will advance to state from this zone.

McPherson (5) — Werries 3-2-2-0, Saverino 1-1-0-0, Reifschneider 1-0-0-0, McDaniel 2-2-1-0, Myers 1-0-0-0, Reiss 2-0-1-1, Robl 1-0-0-0, Reed 4-0-2-2, Reitsma 4-0-0-0, Hanken 3-0-0-0, Wheat 4-0-1-0, Steinert 3-0-1-0.
