KANSAS CITY — McPherson’s Jacob Lackey will have to make a huge rally on Wednesday to qualify for match play in the Kansas State Men’s Amateur Golf Tournament.
Lackey, the current Junior Amateur champion, shot an 80 in today’s first round. He started his day on the back nine and was 4-over-par after his first four holes before playing the final five on the side 1-over for a 40. He was 5-over after five on his second nine before playing the final four even for another 40.
The top 64 advance after Wednesday’s round to match play. Alex Springer of Olathe had the low score of the early finishers with a 66. There were still a number of players still on the course.
Lackey made the field of 64 last year, losing in the first round to 2015 champion Sam Stevens of Wichita.
