NORTH NEWTON — Drew Johnson has been named as the new women’s basketball coach at Bethel College and his wife, former Kansas State star Nicole (Ohlde) Johnson, will serve as his assistant.

Drew Johnson replaces Adam Esses as head coach. Esses recently resigned after one year to take another job.

Johnson served as an assistant coach at Clay Center High School last year and the team went 20-3. He has previous coaching experience at his alma mater Valley Center as well as Derby.

Ohlde-Johnson is one of the most legendary players in Kansas State women’s history as the Wildcats made the NCAA Tournament in all four of her seasons. She was twice named as the Big 12 Player of the Year and was a two-time All-American. She averaged 17.8 points and 7.9 rebounds during her carer.

She later played in the WNBA from 2004 to 2011, winning playing for Phoenix’s 2009 championship team.
