Fawl blisters TC Open field with two 66s

When Treg Fawl is at the top of his game, everybody else is playing for second place.

The current McPherson City golf champion was even hotter than the 100-degree-plus temperatures that baked the inaugural Turkey Creek Open this weekend as he shot matching 66s for a cavern-wide 12-stroke victory.

Fawl’s 66 on Saturday was achieved despite a pair of double bogeys on the back nine. He had turned the front nine in 5-under-par 30 and had it to 7-under after 13 holes, but hit a ball out-of-bounds on No. 14 and later doubled No. 16.

On Sunday, he fashioned a 32 on the front nine and then had eight pars and a birdie on the back for a 34.

Kelly Sorenson, who gave Fawl such a battle in last month’s City Tournament, was again the runner-up after rounds of 74-70-144.

Jacob Lackey, just back from competing in the Kansas Men’s Amateur in Kansas City, shot a 70 on Saturday that included a 32 on his front nine, but struggled on Sunday with a 78 as he stumbled to a 44 on his front nine (which included a 10), but showed a lot of grit by shooting 1-under 34 on his back nine.

Maybe the biggest winner of the day was Gary Hess. All flight winners were put in a drawing for a 2018 Turkey Creek membership and his name was chosen.

Turkey Creek officials were pleased with the turnout for this first-ever event as 59 players took part as there various divisions for various ages. The Open Division played from the blue tees, the Senior Division I played from the white tees and the Senior Division II played from the gold tees.
