Wichita Eagle prep writer Taylor Eldredge ranked McPherson High as having the fifth-best 2016-17 athletic year in the Central Kansas area.
His rankings take into account regular-season success, league titles, regional and sub-state titles, performances at the state level and individual champions in quasi-team sports with a heavy emphasis placed on success at the state level in team sports. There are 41 schools ranked, including all of the Wichita City League and the AV-CTL and the six local schools in the Central Plains League.
According to Eldredge, the Bullpups had the fifth-best girls athletic year and the boys were eighth.
MHS was fifth in the fall sports, second in the winter and ninth in the spring.
Top 10 MHS sports by Eldredge were girls basketball, boys basketball, boys tennis, girls track and field, girls tennis, girls soccer, football, volleyball, boys soccer and boys swimming.
He noted that MHS won nine league titles, eight regional titles and finished in the Top 8 at state in eight sports.
Schools ahead of MHS in the Eldredge power rankings were Bishop Carroll, Maize, South, Maize and Andale.
Andover Central, Cheney, Derby, Kapaun and Newton rounded out the Top 10.
