DODGE CITY — McPherson’s Jacob Lackey outlasted Quentin Shaw of Salina 2 & 1 Thursday in the first round of the Kansas Junior Match Play Championships at Mariah Hills.

The field included the Top 16 junior players in Kansas.

Lackey went in as the No. 1 seed and received a push from the No. 16 Shaw, who played on Sacred Heart’s state championship team in May.

Lackey squares off against Andover’s Zack Sokolosky in the second round, a match that could easily have be for the championship as they were two of the top high school players in Kansas this past year.

Sokolosky is from Andover.

The big surprise of the first round was No. 4 seed Tate Herrunbruck of Salina losing 5 & 4 to No. 13 Gentry Scheve of Emporia. Herrenbruck last week made it to the third round of the Kansas Men’s Amateur Tournament.
