KANSAS CITY — Former McPherson High standout Marcus Houghton (far right in the picture) was one of the two player representatives for Emporia State during the annual MIAA Football Media Day on Tuesday.
Houghton, a 6-1 and 196-pound senior, is expected to be an anchor on the Hornet defense as he’s a mainstay in the secondary. He had 26 tackles last year and had a fumble recovery, returning it 49 yards. He also had a forced fumble.
Emporia State was picked to finish second in the poll, its highest-ever preseason ranking. The Hornets have finished in second four of the last five years.
Since 2012, ESU has compiled a 45-16 record, with seven of those wins coming against Top 20 teams.
Houghton was a jack-of-all-trades during his Bullpup career, as he not only played defensive back, but was a wide receiver and kicker. He earned AVCTL honors.
As expected, defending national champion Northwest Missouri was picked to win the title.
