WICHITA — The Wichita Eagle reported today that longtime and wildly successful boys basketball coach Mitch Fiegel has been fired.

In addition to his basketball duties, Fiegel also was fired as Collegiate’s athletic director. Neither Fiegel nor the school have commented on the decision, The Eagle reported.

According to Eagle prep writer Taylor Eldredge, Fiegel compiled a 478-186 record in his 28 years at Collegiate. He has won six state championships, the same number as McPherson High boys coach Kurt Kinnamon. If you add in his year at Quivira Heights, Fiegel has 493 wins as he would easily have passed the 500 mark this year.

Fiegel used to bring his team to the McPherson Invitational where it was known for playing in waves, as he would start five players and then bring in a new five to replace them.
