NORTH NEWTON – Bethel College has announced the additions of Victor Garcia-Bebek and Alex Hagan as the new head coaches of the men's and women's soccer programs. The two of them are no strangers to the KCAC and south-central Kansas.
From 2002-2015, Garcia-Bebek was on the soccer coaching staffs at Newman University and Friends University.
At Newman, he served as assistant men's coach, 2002-2009, and head women's coach, 2012-15. In between, he was head women's coach at Friends.
Garcia-Bebek also has his own business, VGB Sports Management and Consulting LLC, through which he has worked with a variety of club teams, as well as advised international students looking to earn an American college degree while also playing soccer.
A native of Peru, Garcia-Bebek played at the lower, middle and high school levels as well as semi-pro in Peru.
In 2001, Garcia-Bebek came to Kansas to play college soccer for the Newman Jets, helping achieve a conference championship and Region IV runner-up trophy during his time with the team.
He has a B.S. in business administration and an MBA, both from Newman.
During his most recent coaching tenure, at Newman, Garcia-Bebek guided the Lady Jets to their first post-season tournament appearance (2013).
He was also the founder of, and executive director of coaching for, the Wichita soccer club FC Barcelona KS, 2006-10.
"We are very pleased to get someone with Victor's experience to lead our men's soccer program," Bethel athletic director Tony Hoops said. "Victor's enthusiasm for the game, alongside his great organization skills, lead me to believe he is going to do great things with this program.
"Typically when hiring this late in the summer, you struggle to find a veteran coach," Hoops said, "so to be able to hire someone with Victor's qualifications is very exciting for our department and the college."
Hagan, a native of north Texas, graduated from Bethel in 2016 with a B.S. in health and physical education, a minor in sport management and a coaching certificate.
He played for four years, and coached for two, for the Dallas Texans Soccer Club.
Hagan was a four-year starter for Bethel men's soccer, serving as team captain three years and leading in goals scored each of his four years as a player.
He was an assistant coach for the Bethel men's team during the 2015 season, under Brennan Peacock, and the 2016 season under Mario Felix.
He currently coaches boys' U-17 and U-19 club teams, ASAL FC and KFP United, that competed this month in international soccer tournaments in Denmark (Dana Cup) and Norway (Norway Cup).
"Alex is a young man whom I feel has a very bright future within the coaching ranks," Hoops said.
"I'm extremely excited about the opportunity to coach the Bethel College women's soccer team," Hagan said. "I'm ready to bring a fresh and exciting new look into the women's program. "I believe that we can be successful for years to come, with a young team full of potential.”
