The girls tennis team kicks off the 2017-18 sports season for McPherson High when it competes Thursday in the Hesston Invitational.
Many of the teams in the field have successful pedigrees, including Class 3A state contender Hesston, 4A powers MHS, Smoky Valley and Abilene, along with Maize South.
For MHS coach Tyler Brown, the meet should be a good measuring stick for his team, which is replacing the current Class 4A state doubles champions Rachel Ivers and Ellea Ediger.
“I don't think any of us have that elite player like an Ellea Ediger or something, but there are state qualifiers and just solid players,” he said. “It probably comes down just whoever plays well that day.”
Brown has settled on a lineup that includes Maisie Edmonson, Taylor Bruce, Rachel Carlson, Ashley Achilles, Daphne Carrillo and CeAnna Allen. Who will play what position is still being mulled over by Brown, but Edmonson was seventh in the state in singles last year, while Carlson was 12th. Bruce was part of a doubles team that took ninth.
But Brown is still tinkering in the preseason and his lineup could change from meet to meet.
