7th-graders snare 14-0 football win

McPherson’s seventh-grade football team was stout in its season opener here Thursday, pitching a 14-0 shutout against Salina South.

“We were really proud of the guys and how they played today,” MMS coach Brandt Busse said. “Our defense was outstanding. The offensive line really played well, allowing us to rush for over 100 yards. Glad they were able to come away with a win.”

Hunter Alvord ran for a touchdown and Sam Becker caught a TD pass from Hadlee Backhus.

The MMS ground game was led by Jayton Gumm, who had 94 yards on 12 carries and scored on a 2-point conversion. Treyton Pelnar added 43 on eight carries and Alvord rushed for 28 yards. Alvord was 3 for 4 passing for 30 yards and Backhus was 2 of 7 for 10 yards.
